Sometimes the easiest way to get other people on board with living more sustainably is to get them a super awesome gift. I find that giving gifts that are sustainable, but don’t require extra work or time to use, work best. Here’s 5 eco-friendly Father’s Day gifts.
Travel Utensil Set
This is one of my favorite gifts to give on any occasion and one of my most popular. Nearly everyone I’ve given one to has loved it. This is an inexpensive option, so you could also pair it with something else you know the person will love.
I personally go for sets with all the utensils (fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks) plus straws & straw cleaner. Most sets include a carrying case, and I try to find one with a waterproof liner. I tend to get stainless steel sets so they can go in a dishwasher, but there’s also bamboo sets. They’re great for people who travel frequently or even just someone who works in an office.
Reusable Drink Container
Everyone can use a reusable drink container. I use “drink container” because there are so many types. For instance, reusable travel mugs with lids, reusable water bottles, reusable cups with lids (like a Yeti), etc.
Get the one that your recipient is most likely to use. In my dad’s case, that’s a Yeti that he can put his iced tea in. The father-figure in your life may love coffee, get a reusable travel mug then. There are tons of options on the market.
I like to get one that is dishwasher-safe, which can be difficult to find for insulated containers. This is because I hate washing dishes by hand, and assume that the person I’m giving it to probably does, too. You know the person best, so get one you think they will actually use.
Stashers
This might seem like a strange gift idea, but stay with me! Stashers are dishwasher-safe, come in a plethora of sizes and colors, and can be used for more than just storing food. You can use them for marinating meat, storing your liquids when you travel, making a small first-aid kit, as a bag for your beach day, organization, and tons more.
Stashers are easy to care for and they have partnered with TerraCycle to recycle bags that are no longer usable (I haven’t had to use this yet). They could be a great gift for the chef in your life (you can do sous-vide cooking with them) or the person who needs to take snacks with them everywhere.
Bamboo TP
Stereotypically, dads and bathroom jokes go together. So if the dad in your life enjoys some humor, why not get him a box of Who Gives A Crap bamboo toilet paper? (You could get a different brand, I just haven’t tried any others)
You can check out this post for more information on why regular toilet paper is bad for the planet.
Everyone needs toilet paper and after experiencing toilet paper hoarding during the pandemic, dad will be glad to be stocked up.
Bidet Attachment
For the adventurous dad in your life (or one getting a colonoscopy soon), a bidet attachment can be a fun and humorous gift. I got my dad one for his birthday last year after he had a colonoscopy and had complained about the aftermath of the prep for it. Now he doesn’t know how he lived so long without one!
You can find a basic one on Amazon for less than $35 and they are pretty easy to install. I didn’t opt for a fancy name-brand one, though you certainly can. Unless you know that there’s an electrical outlet near your recipient’s toilet, I’d recommend getting a non-electric one.
I hope this has given you some ideas for eco-friendly Father’s Day gifts. Let me know if you give one and it’s a hit!
